RAPAPORT... The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) announced its 39th annual award winners in New Delhi this week celebrating the performance of exporters, brands and local diamond companies. The chief guest for the ceremony was Sheila Dikshit, the chief minister of Delhi, and the guest of honor was Jyotiraditya Scindia, India's union minister of state, commerce and industry.
“The industry has weathered rough storms due to various economic conditions prevailing in the international market. However, the industry has shown signs of improvement with the encouraging orders for the forthcoming festive season to make up for lost business opportunities in the past few months,” said Rajiv Jain, the chairman of GJEPC. “We hope that the end of the year will see a culmination of efforts to put the trading fraternity’s fears of a slowdown to rest by way of increased exports and better business.”
GJEPC holds the annual awards at different locations each year, as it aims to encourage and promote greater participation amongst members of the industry. India exported gems and jewelry worth $42.84 billion in fiscal 2012, slightly down from $43 billion the previous year. However, the exports increased 4.6 percent year on year in rupee terms.
“The gems and jewelry sector is one of the fastest growing segments of the Indian economy. It has also emerged as a leader in churning out foreign exchange,” Scindia stated. “Even though we face a few challenges today, especially after the rising prices of gold, we can conquer them by exploring the arenas of retail, marketing, advertising, shows and exhibitions, investment in foreign companies and investments from private equity firms and corporate houses.”
Dixit said that by honoring the distinguished exporters and importers of the industry and budding students taking training in the gem and jewelry institutes, the industry would be benefited at large and that would go a long way in enhancing the quantum of export.
In addition to recognizing the efforts of the exporters, the GJEPC also awarded the importers from across the globe and the banks financing the industry, among others.
