Kimberley Process Chair to Host Discussion on Conflict Diamonds

RAPAPORT... Kimberley Process chairperson Gillian Milovanovic will hold a live online discussion about conflict diamonds and other reforms with industry stakeholders today.
The discussion is open to the public and is scheduled at 9 a.m. EDT (14:00 GMT) at https://conx.state.gov/digital-diplomacy/.
Milovanovic will talk about conflict diamonds and the international system for managing the trade in rough diamonds to exclude those that fund conflict, among other topics.
“We need to discuss and eventually adopt a new definition of conflict diamond, one that will encompass agreed situations of conflict in which diamonds are directly involved,” Milovanovic said at the recently concluded World Diamond Congress 2012 in Mumbai. “There should be a definition that applies clearly and predictably to every participant, and one that ensures that the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme assurances correspond to the evolving expectations of consumers.”
The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) launched in 2003 to break the link between the sale of rough diamonds and armed conflict. It is a certification-of-origin system with currently 77 diamond-producing member states, diamond industry players and civil society members.
