RAPAPORT... IWC Schaffhausen will auction a Portuguese Automatic Edition ''Tribeca Film Festival 2013'' timepiece on April 10 at Antiquorum to benefit the Tribeca Film Institute (TFI). IWC is the official ''Festive-Time'' partner for the Tribeca Film Festival this year, which runs from April 17 to 28.
The special edition watch features the Pellaton winding system, seven day power reserve and date display. The 50,000-caliber family of large IWC-manufactured movements was originally developed for the Portuguese Automatic to mark the start of the new millennium, it subsequently received a date display. The hands, numerals and hour markers are made of rose gold and the bordeaux-colored subdials were inspired by Hollywood glamor of the iconic red carpet, while the slate colored dial is drawn from the steel and concrete architecture of Tribeca in lower Manhattan. The Tribeca Film Festival 2013 watch has a platinum case, which is extremely rare for the Portuguese Collection, according to the watchmaker. The auction will take place live at Antiquorum on Madison Avenue in New York, with real-time bidding on the Internet. Proceeds will support the TFI, a nonprofit arts organization that supports filmmakers with grants, professional development and resources, while also helping students to discover film and filmmaking. "Great films are the result of exceptional attention to detail and craftsmanship; traits that are clearly shared by IWC," said Beth Janson, the executive director of the TFI. "We are happy to be aligned with IWC in their creation of a unique piece to celebrate the work of filmmakers and their support of the industry." Georges Kern, the CEO IWC Schaffhausen, added, "We believe new voices should be heard and are convinced that projects as well as talents from Tribeca Film Institute deserve an international stage." Kern explained that there are important similarities between the film and watch industries, whereas both rely on an appreciation of time and determination to make thousands of parts work in harmony behind the scenes. Antiquorum's CEO, Evan Zimmerman, said, "We are delighted to offer this outstanding IWC timepiece in our April 10th auction. This is truly a rare opportunity to own an exceptional timepiece that combines the excellence of fine Swiss timekeeping with a unique connection to the exciting world of film."
