RAPAPORT... The Tanzanite Foundation was selected for the 2013 Best of Manhattan Award in the category of community organizations by the Manhattan Award Program. The Tanzanite Foundation is a non-profit trade group dedicated to promoting and protecting tanzanite, while keeping the gem free from exploitation and unethical behavior.

The Tanzanite Foundation has built two schools, a medical clinic and a community center and is responsible for pumping fresh water into the local community outside of the tanzanite mining area.  Recently, the group commissioned gemstone carver Naomi Sarna to teach a group of MaasaI women the art of wire wrap jewelry making, with tumbled tanzanite donated by neighboring TanzaniteOne Mining.

Hayley Henning, the executive director of the Tanzanite Foundation, said  that this award is a testament to the fact that people do take notice of work that is being done to make a difference in the lives of those outside of the tanzanite mining area.

The Manhattan Award Program is an annual initiative that honors the achievements and accomplishments of New York metro businesses that have incorporated best practices  to generate a competitive advantage and long-term value.
