RAPAPORT... The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will present “Synthetic Diamonds and Treatments” to its Alumni Africa Chapter on May 18 in Pretoria, South Africa. Thomas M. Moses, the senior vice president of GIA’s laboratory and research, will discuss the topic as part of GIA’s efforts to bring its industry-leading education, research and laboratory services to the diamond and gem industry in Africa. The event is free and open to the public but reservations are requested ahead of time (email Elizabeth Bokaba at ebokaba-at-gia.edu).
Moses began his career with GIA in 1977 and is recognized as a leading gemologist. He is the recipient of GIA’s highest honor, the Richard T. Liddicoat Award for distinguished achievement and he oversees all of GIA's laboratory and research operations and activities. There are two GIA Alumni Chapters and nearly 800 GIA alumni in Africa. The Institute’s alumni chapter in Botswana was formed in 2010 and hosts networking events and informational seminars, while an alumni chapter in South Africa was formed in early 2013 and held its first event in March 2013.
