Rapaport News: What prompted you to pursue a career in the diamond and jewelry industry?

RC:
My wife, Pilar, has been the greatest inspiration in my life. After she graduated from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in Vicenza, she asked me to make her a piece of jewelry with diamonds. From that moment, I began to focus on diamonds to complement my work with gold jewelry.

Rapaport News:
Do you have a business philosophy that guides you in your work?

RC: I believe that standing out in a niche market is very important. My greatest strength is being able to offer something different.

Rapaport News: What do you consider to be your greatest professional accomplishment?

RC: In general, the level of respect I have achieved in the industry over the years has been a tremendous accomplishment for me. I recently won the Palladio International Award for the best brand in corporate social responsibility. I was very touched to receive this prestigious honor.

Rapaport News: What has been the most notable change in the diamond and jewelry industry over the course of your career?

RC: Many changes have occurred in the past few years, though not all have been positive. The prices of gold and diamonds have increased by too much, too quickly. Such drastic price fluctuation damages the trade, as it is often too difficult to explain the large and erratic price changes to consumers.

Rapaport News: Given your involvement in the World Diamond Council, what are the most pressing ethical challenges currently facing the diamond and jewelry industry?

RC: The historic commitment of the World Diamond Council and of our former president, Eli Izhakoff, has made the diamond and jewelry industry a better place for everybody. It may not be perfect, but it is much better than it was in the past. The current challenge is to ensure that we continue on the same path without giving up.

Rapaport News: How has Italian jewelry design changed in the past few years?

RC: Design is continuously changing and improving to match changing trends regardless of the economic environment. Design is certainly influenced by social conditions but also because consumer taste and trends are constantly changing.

Rapaport News: What added value does Italian jewelry design bring to the market today?

RC:
I think that Italian jewelry has a beauty and quality that is unique and reflects our passion and joy for design and manufacturing. We make sure that our clients make each purchase with a smile.

Rapaport News:
Has Italy’s role been compromised with the growth of mass production centers, such as in China and India?

RC: Of course it has. I have a feeling, however, that once Italy’s political issues will be resolved, we will regain our status as global leaders of fashion and aesthetics because it is in our genes.

Rapaport News: What is the secret to developing a successful jewelry brand?

RC: A successful jewelry brand requires a lot of hard work. It has been my life’s work to achieve international recognition for my brand. This has not been an easy. Each of the 53 countries in which we operate requires a unique strategy accounting for differences in style, culture, and economic development. I do my best to satisfy everyone every day.

Rapaport News: Describe your typical work day?

RC:
I don’t have typical days, because all of my days are very different. I am personally involved in all aspects of my company, including design, manufacturing, marketing and finances. Whether I am dealing with banks or celebrities, I find time for everything.

Rapaport News: What is your favorite part of your work?

RC:
I have the greatest appreciation for design. It is the most creative part of my work. For me, the joy of design is like celebrating the birth of a child every day.

Rapaport News: What advice would you give to someone starting out in the diamond and jewelry industry?

RC: Learn as much as possible from the best maestros in the world and then strive to be different from them. Be creative and find your own niche.
