Press Release:  Gemesis – the world’s principal distributor of gem-quality lab-grown diamonds – today announced the company’s sponsorship of a jewelry design competition for students at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT).

Students enrolled in FIT’s Jewelry Design program will be challenged to create a “stylishly sustainable” engagement ring featuring Gemesis grown diamonds. The winning design will be featured and potentially produced and sold on Gemesis.com.

FIT has long been a leader in design education and we’re proud to partner with such a renowned college, said Gemesis. We anticipate outstanding concepts from these talented students and look forward to the end results.

“FIT strives to provide opportunities that afford its students hands-on, real-world experience, and we believe this competition does that,” said Michael Coan, the chair of FIT’s Jewelry Design program. “As a college whose mission states a commitment to sustainability, we are also pleased to have the opportunity for students to work with lab-grown diamonds.”

Final designs will be presented in March 2014 and evaluated by a panel of industry judges on the basis of originality, effectiveness of design and interpretation of the “stylishly sustainable” theme. Gemesis will also host a consumer voting period via its Facebook page, during which fans will vote for their favorite design. The concept with the most votes will be deemed the “fan favorite.” All winners – as outlined below – will be announced in March:

·         First Prize: $2,000 Gemesis award; winning design to be featured, and potentially produced and sold, on Gemesis.com (determined by judging panel);

·         Second Prize: $1,500 Gemesis award (determined by judging panel);

·         Fan Favorite: $1,000 Gemesis award (determined by social media voting).
