Press Release: The Panjikar Gem Research & Tech Institute (Pangemtech) of Pune held its fourth annual convocation on Wednesday, December 3, 2014. The chief guest at this occasion was Dusan Simic of the Analytical Gem & Jewellery (AG&J) laboratory from New York.  Simic is known in the international diamond industry as an expert on synthetic diamonds, especially on chemical vapor deposition (CVD).

In addition, there were 12 students who received their basic gemology certificates that day, 10 students were awarded advanced gemology, 12 students qualified in their diamond grading accolade and six students finished up with a diploma certificate of “Professional Gemmologist.”   The program was also attended by 20 students from Aurangabad Deogiri College. Deogiri College has started Bachelor of Vocational Science in gemology.

The program began with a detailed PowerPoint presentation that was organized by PAN-GEMS (alumni association) on “Career Avenues in the Field of Gemology.” Dr. Jayshree Panjikar, the CEO of Pangemtech, spoke on how simple mineral crystals such as rock crystal, rose quartz and amethyst found in the Deccan traps can be made into jewelry. Besides, gemology is also associated with fields such as crystal healing, tarot card, fengsui, astrology and reiki, etc. The seminar was basically focused on the future in gemology for the students of Deogiri College.

Simic offered a detailed talk on the hot topic of how to identify synthetic diamonds by simple means. It is now established that CVD synthetic diamonds are slowly flooding the market as the technology to produce these stones has developed by leaps and bounds. Three methods were explained: Use of crossed polar filters, diffused light technique and UV light with a microscope to detect zoned fluorescence.  It was indeed a very informative and educative seminar.
