RAPAPORT... Bonhams fine jewelry sale in London realized $6.6 million (GBP 4.3 million), with the top lot a 9.05-carat, D, VS1, pear-shaped diamond ring by Harry Winston, which sold for $533,846 (GBP 350,500) to a U.S. bidder.
A 21.27-carat sugarloaf cabochon Kashmir sapphire and diamond ring sold for $442,460 (GBP 290,500) or three times the presale estimate, followed by a 17.97-carat Burmese sapphire and diamond ring, which fetched $277,965 (GBP 182,500) against a high presale estimate of $91,385.
Additionally, a 7.10-carat, fancy light pinkish brown, pear-shaped diamond ring sold for more than five times its presale estimate of $30,461 (GBP 20,000) and achieved a final price of $179,268 (GBP 117,700).
Jean Ghika, the director of Bonhams jewelry department, noted that the auction results underline the buoyancy of the market. "The sale performed exceptionally well and generated strong interest from buyers in the U.K., Europe, the U.S. and Asia. I was particularly delighted to see many of our colored gemstones sell so well, some by up to 10 times their presale estimate, which is an excellent indication of how strong the market is."
Bonhams will its next jewelry sale in Hong Kong on June 3 and in New York on June 22.
