Colored Gemstones Gain Favor witith Younger Urban Indian Women: Survey

RAPAPORT... Close to 19 percent of Indian women age 18 to 64 own jewelry made with natural colored gemstones, according to survey of eight key urban markets in India conducted by Drshti Strategic Research Services.

The survey, sponsored by colored gemstone miner Gemfields, found that nearly 12 percent of respondents acquired gemstone jewelry within the past 12 months. Of those who acquired gemstone jewelry, 62 percent lived in the Delhi or Hyderabad regions.

“India has been a key market for Gemfields and will continue to be one of our main focus regions in the coming year,” said Dev Shetty, chief operations officer at Gemfields. “The report provides comprehensive insights and analysis that will help Gemfields build a branding and communication strategy for colored gemstones in the Indian market.”

Gemfields is a commercial scale producer of emeralds and amethysts from Zambia and rubies from Mozambique. The company already sales a large share of its colored gemstones to cutters and polishers based in Jaipur, India.

Drshti also found that smaller pieces dominated the colored gemstone jewelry market, with rings comprising 52 percent of such jewelry items, and earrings constituting 14 percent. By value, the survey estimated that 50 percent of the gemstone jewelry market is comprised of small items.

The survey found the 40 percent of colored gemstone rings were purchased were for astrological reasons, although astrological oriented jewelry only accounted for 10 percent to 15 percent of the total colored gemstone jewelry market by value.
