RAPAPORT... Michael Hill has opened its first store in New York amid planned expansion for the Australian jeweler on the U.S. East coast.

The retailer’s inaugural New York launch sees it set up shop in Queens Center in Elmhurst, National Jeweler reported. It has also secured a location for a new store at Roosevelt Field mall in Garden City, New York, in the same complex as Blue Nile's “webroom concept experience” where customers try on before buying items online.

Michael Hill is also planning to open a store at the American Dream Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey, but the project has hit delays, according to National Jeweler.

Once all the planned stores are up and running, Michael Hill will have 11 locations in the US. Up until now the U.S. has been Michael Hill’s smallest jewelry market, with sales for the year ending June 30 rising 13 percent to $11.3 million, but comparable-store sales rose by just 3.5 percent.

Before the new launches, the group’s U.S. stores were all in Illinois, Minnesota and Ohio, according to a list of stores on its website.
