RAPAPORT... India’s Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) will establish a Natural Diamond Monitoring Committee (NDMC) in Surat, the trade association said following the conclusion of a seminar on detecting synthetics.

GJEPC chairman Praveenshankar Pandya announced the committee for Surat would be set up “soon” following the success of its counterpart in Mumbai, according to a statement by the GJEPC and the Bharat Diamond Bourse December 18.

The Diamond Detection Expo and Symposium, organized by the GJEPC and the BDB, ran December 15 to 16 in Mumbai and featured displays of detection equipment, talks and panel discussions from experts and presentations by service providers.

Separately, the gem and jewelry industry is working to ensure businesses can install detection machines in their offices, BDB president Anoop Mehta said in the statement.

“This is very much possible if demand for the technology increases, bringing the unit cost of each machine within reach for even the smallest businesses,” Mehta said. “It is essential to draw a parallel with digital technology that had completely replaced the old diamond weighing scales in a matter of a little more than a decade.”

Fast and affordable detection is essential for “protecting” the diamond industry from undisclosed mixing of natural and synthetic stones, according to Ashish Mehta, convener of the NDMC.

The BDB banned trading in synthetics on the exchange’s premises earlier this year following a members’ vote.
