De Beers Subsidiary Starts Legal Action Against IIa Technologies for Patent Violation

Six, De Beers' synthetics business, began legal action January 12 in Singapore against IIa Technologies,
alleging an infringement of patents.
Some patents for proprietary synthetic diamond
products and their manufacturing method have been infringed, in particular
Singapore patent numbers 115872 and 110508, Element Six claimed in a statement January
12.
The Singapore-based grower of colorless type-IIa
gems is “exploiting Element Six patents for commercial gain,” potentially in both
the industrial and jewelry sectors, the statement alleged. The patents in
questions related to the production of materials for optical uses such as
infra-red spectroscopy and high-power laser optics.
“Element
Six has invested hundreds of millions of dollars over more than 50 years to
become the world’s leading producer of synthetic diamond material, developing
new material to tackle some of science and industry’s most intractable
challenges,” the statement said.
“Any use of Element Six patents, without its
consent, negatively impacts its ability to get a full return from its investment
and undermines its ability to carry out further important research and
development.”
Walter Hühn, chief executive officer of
Element Six, said synthetic diamond material “can be – and is – produced
without infringing our patents,” adding that “this is a straightforward case of
patent infringement and, as any company would do, Element Six is taking action
to defend its position.”
