Crimes Committed Against U.S. Jewelry Firms Slump in 2015

RAPAPORT... The total number of crimes committed against U.S. jewelry
firms that were reported to the Jewelers’ Security Alliance (JSA) slumped last
year, leading to an 11-percent drop in dollar losses.
Crimes reported
fell by 15 percent to 1,177 in 2015 as authorities were successful in catching lawbreakers,
according to the latest data. Total dollar losses fell to $77.8 million and the
number of jewelers killed in crimes against jewelry firms fell from three to
two.
“Due to
excellent work by the FBI and local law enforcement agencies, there were
arrests of two major smash-and-grab robbery gangs in the first half of 2015,”
the JSA said in a statement March 4. “As a result of these arrests, there were
half as many smash and grab robberies in the second half of 2015 (24) as in the
first half of 2015 (48).”
Smash-and-grab
robberies last year numbered 72 compared to 110 in 2014, the JSA said.
The FBI and
local law-enforcement agencies also helped in the arrest of a major rooftop
burglary gang, resulting in a 47-percent drop in the number of burglaries
involving criminals entering from the roof, to 19 in 2015.
The most
active day for burglaries was Thursday, while Sunday was the quietest.
