Rio Tinto Launches Chain of Custody Program

RAPAPORT... Rio Tinto announced a scheme to track diamonds from its Argyle mine through the supply chain in response to growing consumer and trade interest in diamond provenance.

The miner will enforce its chain of custody initiative using a trademark and a suite of marketing materials, including a Certificate of Authenticity, to which authorized suppliers and retailers will have access. The certificate will accompany accredited jewelry throughout the supply chain, the company explained.

The ‘Australian Diamonds’ program was launched in China where Rio Tinto has partnered with jeweler Chow Tai Fook to promote fashion jewelry through its supply of diamonds from Argyle in Western Australia. The miner explained Chinese consumers are increasingly looking for authenticity in their products, which is captured in diamonds from Australia.

“Increasingly, the value of a diamond is tied to where and how the diamond was mined, how it was cut and polished and the process of bringing it to sale,” said Bruno Sane, the general manager of marketing for Rio Tinto Diamonds. “This is a very reasonable expectation that is steadily reshaping the diamond industry for the better.”
