RAPAPORT... Lucapa Diamond Company recovered 59 “special” diamonds from its Lulo mine in Angola last month – more than the 53 it produced in the entire first half of the year. Special diamonds are those weighing more than 10.8 carats.

The miner reported record monthly recovery of 3,164 carats in July that includes its highest output in a single day of 448 carats. This eclipsed a previous milestone set the day it discovered a 404-carat stone, Angola’s largest rough diamond in history. The month’s diamond grade of 15 carats per 100 cubic meters was also the company’s best to date, Lucapa said.

The record recoveries and grades were the result of Lucapa’s continued investment in new earth-moving fleet and plant upgrades as well as a focus on the high-value Mining Block 8, the company said.

The latest sale of rough diamonds from Lulo fetched $1.8 million (AUD 2.4 million), or $905 per carat, in July, the miner added.
