AG&J Unveils Synthetic Detection Technique

RAPAPORT... Analytical Gemology & Jewelry (AG&J) has applied to patent a method for detecting synthetic diamonds that it claims is more efficient than existing techniques.
The method identifies stones that luminesce, or give off light, when exposed to ultra-violet light, a feature of synthetic diamonds. The equipment can be used for loose stones of any color, size and shape, and mounted in jewelry, and can detect synthetics created with high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) or chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology.
The invention will simplify and cut the cost of identifying synthetics, said Dusan Simic, chief executive officer of AG&J, a New York-based laboratory. It will help abolish mingling of lab-grown diamonds with jewelry and parcels of natural stones, he added.
