RAPAPORT... Pit mining at the Lerala diamond mine in Botswana has been suspended to reduce accumulated ore stockpiles.

Mining rates at Lerala have exceeded the plant’s current ability to process feed, resulting in surplus ore, owner Kimberley Diamonds said. Botswana subsidiary Lerala Diamond Mines asked external contractor Basil Read to pause pit mining at the K3 kimberlite pipe to deal with the situation.

Lerala expects the suspension to continue for three to four months or until stockpiles are reduced.

The move is a “cost-saving measure” and is not anticipated to impact production levels, Kimberley said.
