RAPAPORT... Retailers are promoting the days immediately after Thanksgiving as ‘Cyber Week’ as the key online shopping day has ballooned into an extended retail bonanza.

While in previous years Black Friday and Cyber Monday each lasted 24 hours, both are now starting early and the season for online deals is stretching into the entire week, not just Monday.

“Three out of four customers tell us they want to shop cyber deals earlier,” said Steve Breen, senior vice president of merchandising of The department store chain Walmart will open its stores for Black Friday early, from Thursday night, and begin Cyber Week this Friday.

Over the last decade, Cyber Monday has become the most important U.S. ecommerce day of the year. It falls three days after Black Friday – the traditional shopping event when U.S. consumers go shopping en masse. Black Friday comes a day after the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S. and is widely seen as the opening day of the holiday shopping season.

Macy’s will kick off Black Friday a day early, starting 5 p.m Thursday, offering 70 percent off in clearance fine jewelry. Its Cyber Week starts with a preview on Sunday, running till next Thursday, with online deals throughout. Chicago-based department store chain Sears will start its cyber deals Sunday at 12.01 a.m., continuing until Tuesday, while Kohl’s said its “Cyber Days” will stretch from Sunday to Wednesday.

“We know our customers enjoy getting a head start in finding the perfect gift,” explained Tim Baxter, Macy’s chief merchandising officer.

Black Friday sales this year will exceed $3 billion for the first time and Cyber Monday will be the largest online shopping day in U.S. history with $3.36 billion of sales, according to Adobe Digital Insights. Last year’s Cyber Monday sales increased 12 percent to a record $2.3 billion, data company Comscore said.
