HRD Antwerp has teamed up with Shanghai-based jewelry retailer Chow Tai Seng to introduce a service that will boost confidence among consumers in China.

The partnership involves the establishment of HRD’s first ‘Centre of Excellence’ in China – a program to bridge the gap between gemological labs and consumers through in-store tools that explain grading to customers. The center will only sell diamonds and diamond jewelry with an HRD report.

HRD previously piloted such a center in Paris and is now rolling out the same concept in Shanghai.

“China is the second most important and fastest growing market in the world for polished diamonds, making it a priority for HRD Antwerp,” the lab said. “The close connection between a retailer and one of the leading certification institutes in the world is intended to give consumers greater trust in the jeweler.”

Chow Tai Seng, which will jointly run the center with HRD, is one of the largest jewelry retailers in Mainland China, with 2,100 points of sale in 23 provinces in China. It is also the exclusive distributor in China of the ‘Love 100 Antwerp’ diamond design.

The Centre of Excellence was opened during an Antwerp trade mission to Shanghai and the Korean capital Seoul, attended by Mayor of Antwerp Bart De Wever, as well as Antwerp’s Alderman for Diamonds, Ludo van Campenhout. During the visit, HRD also said it will launch bilingual diamond grading reports in English and Chinese as well as in English and Korean.
