RAPAPORT... Tiffany & Co has taken the unusual step of publishing its opinion on a current political issue, urging US President Donald Trump to keep the country in the Paris Climate Agreement.

The jeweler “strongly supports” the US remaining in the protocol, it posted on its Facebook page Tuesday. Tiffany also used its regular advertising spot in The New York Times to send the same message.

“We’re still in for bold climate action,” read a statement addressed directly to Trump, who pledged to “cancel” the United Nations accord on his campaign trail last year.

“Please keep the US in the Paris Climate Agreement. The disaster of climate change is too real, and the threat to our planet and to our children is too great,” the New York-based retailer added.

The post, which had more than 19,000 reactions and 2,000 shares as of press time, provoked discussion in the comments about Tiffany’s decision.

Not all readers appreciated the company’s contribution to the debate. One reader commented, “Tiffany, please keep your political opinions out of my retail choices.”

Others defended Tiffany’s right to express its opinion, with one responding, “You can shop elsewhere. Thanks Tiffany & Co. for standing up for common sense and sanity, which seems to be lacking among some of your customers!”

Another commenter added that the jeweler “probably factored in any business they may lose by expressing their political beliefs, and obviously it isn’t going to send them into bankruptcy anytime soon.”

Trump will wait until after the G7 summit of world leaders later this month before announcing his decision on the US’s involvement in the Paris agreement, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Tuesday.
