Gahcho Kué Yields 85ct. Diamond

RAPAPORT... Mountain Province Diamonds has recovered the largest stone yet
from its Gahcho Kué mine in Canada, the company said Wednesday.
The rough diamond weighs 84.65 carats and will feature in
Mountain Province’s upcoming sales in Antwerp, alongside a 53.90-carat diamond from
the same site. Both discoveries took place in April.
Mountain Province and De Beers, which also has a stake in Gahcho Kué, bid
nearly every month to determine which of them gets to sell the “special”
diamonds — those over 10.8 carats — that the mine has produced. Mountain
Province won in April, enabling it to sell the goods in Antwerp through its
broker, Bonas.
“The 84.65-carat diamond is the largest gem-quality diamond
recovered to date and provides further confirmation that Gahcho Kué hosts a
population of large, high-quality gem diamonds,” said Mountain Province CEO
Patrick Evans.
The 53.90-carat rough is the highest-quality large stone the
mine has yielded, and the company expects it will achieve a record price at
tender, Evans added.
Before the latest discoveries, the largest gem-quality
diamond from Gahcho Kué was a 67.87-carat stone that Mountain Province extracted
earlier this year. Production at the mine started in September.
