The American Gem Society (AGS) honored three accomplished figures in the gem and jewelry industry at a ceremony in New York last week.

Dr. James Shigley, a distinguished fellow of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), picked up the Lifetime Achievement Award, AGS said following the ceremony. Meanwhile, the AGS Triple Zero Award, named after the organization’s highest diamond grade, went to Myriam Gumuchian, vice president and director of jeweler Gumuchian, and to Peter Engel, president of Fred Meyer Jewelers.

“I have always known about the American Gem Society, ever since I came into the business,” said Gumuchian, whose family-run company selects its diamonds at its offices in Antwerp and manufactures jewelry in New York.

“My father’s [loose-diamond] company was a member [of AGS], and I was always very proud of it,” she added. “To me, it was similar to the Good Housekeeping seal of approval. So naturally, when my sister and I joined my mother’s jewelry design company, we applied for membership and have been a member ever since.”

The AGS presented the awards at its 17th “Circle of Distinction” dinner at New York’s Plaza Hotel.
