RAPAPORT... China’s Shenzhen Rough Diamond Exchange (SRDE) hosted an India Diamond Week to promote trade between the two countries.

The June 13 to 15 event — in partnership with India’s Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) — drew 20 Indian diamond manufacturers and more than 100 jewelry producers, retailers and diamond companies from Shenzhen and other regions of China. Participating Indian firms included Star Rays, Hari Krishna Exports, Venu Diamond and Dharam Creations.

The event was important for promoting trade between India and China, SRDE vice president Julius Zheng said last week.

Gem and jewelry trading between the two countries grew 29% to $21.41 billion in 2017, according to Sanjay Singh, the GJEPC’s regional director for the state of Rajasthan.

Around 10 million couples get married in China every year, opening up a large market for jewelry sales, according to Guo Xiaofei, secretary general of the Shenzhen Gold and Jewelry Association.
