Diamond trade cautious after slow Hong Kong show. Demand selective and inventory levels high, with buyers insisting on deep discounts for goods under 0.50 ct. Low manufacturing profits reducing Indian polished production as smaller goods not making money. 0.30ct. RAPI -0.6%, 1 ct. RAPI +0.1% in Feb. with better market for 0.70 to 1.99 ct. Shares in J.C. Penney (+33%) surged after investors welcomed the company’s turnaround plan. Other US retailers fell, with Macy’s (-5%) and Signet (-8%) both down. An improved outlook for US-China trade relations boosted Chow Tai Fook (+9%). Michael Hill (+21%) continued its rise after announcing promising results last week. Mining stocks dropped after De Beers reported weak sales of smaller goods, with Petra Diamonds (-4.9%) falling for the third week in a row. Firestone Diamonds (-12%), Mountain Province (-5%), Gem Diamonds (-5%), Alrosa (-3%) and Lucapa Diamond (-2.6%) all lost ground.
