RAPAPORT... The World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO) has produced a special report on ethics ahead of its annual congress in Bahrain next month.

“Weaving It All Together: An Ethical Status Report at the End of 2019,” released on Wednesday, covers a variety of topics, ranging from international frameworks to advertising and disclosure. Its author is Tiffany Stevens, president of CIBJO’s ethics commission and CEO of the Jewelers Vigilance Committee.

Key recommendations include adherence to “industry-specific tools” such as CIBJO’s own responsible-sourcing guidelines. The standards were issued in January and are underpinned by due-diligence principles set out by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The report also advocates a three-step process for ethical disclosure, incorporating due diligence of the supply chain, a comprehensive internal risk assessment, and “clear and effective communication on these results to the next party to receive the goods.”

“Weaving It All Together” is the sixth in a series of special reports CIBJO has issued weekly in the run-up to its annual congress. Others include a special diamond report, published October 2, which examines the “fault line” between natural and lab-grown stones.
