RAPAPORT... The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has appointed Mark Buntz senior vice president and chief marketing officer, to drive the future of the organization’s brand.

A marketing veteran with more than 20 years of experience in global brand marketing, advertising, communications, sales and broadcasting, Buntz is tasked with supporting the expansion of the GIA’s education, laboratory services, and instruments businesses into new markets. He will also be responsible for extending GIA’s 4Cs of Diamond Quality consumer outreach program, the organization said Monday.

Buntz previously worked for TaylorMade Golf Company as vice president of global brand marketing, and has held executive positions with ESPN, NBC Universal and Hulu.

“Mark brings invaluable expertise with leading companies which have reached pinnacles of success in their fields,” said GIA CEO Susan Jacques. “He is a proven innovator and a passionate storyteller who, with his enthusiasm and new perspective, will help advance GIA’s initiatives to connect with consumers and the gem and jewelry industry.”

Buntz succeeds Kathryn Kimmel, who retired in August after 30 years with the GIA. He will be based at the institute’s headquarters in Carlsbad, California, and will report to Jacques.
