India’s Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) has signed a cooperation agreement with eBay, aiming to boost the sector’s online sales and educate members about e-commerce.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) with ES Online Services (India), part of the eBay group, calls for the global e-tail giant to create a micro-site for the Indian jewelry trade. The page, called “Made in India,” will bring together all GJEPC members that sell on eBay, making them more accessible to visitors, the trade body said in a recent statement.

ES Online Services will organize educational events to teach GJEPC members about e-commerce opportunities and train them on how to use the site effectively. It will also provide intelligence on the market and on design trends. The GJEPC will set up an e-commerce promotion and facilitation desk at its six regional offices.

“Demand for gems and jewelry is picking up in all major export markets,” said GJEPC chairman Colin Shah. “Hence, it is important for us to tap all important online opportunities. I believe this association with eBay will be a key catalyst for the digital transformation of the gems and jewelry sector in India.”
