(Rapaport...February 7, 2006) The Diamond Trading Company hired ACNielsen to survey 6,054 consumers in 15 countries in order to determine the popularity of diamonds as Valentine's Day gifts.

Most of the men surveyed said they attempt to make February 14th a special day for women; however, gestures go "unnoticed." The majority of women said they received nothing from men on Valentine's Day 2005.

Men from the United Kingdom by in large said they want to give a diamond for Valentine's Day. British women (80 percent) placed a diamond gift at the top of their wish list. But British men were ranked (along with German men) as least romantic for Valentine's Day according to the survey.

Respondents across 14 countries perceived that French men were the most romantic nationality; however, French women did not agree.

Italy took the lead for diamond gift-giving on Valentine's Day. More than one-in-ten women received a diamond on February 14, 2005.
