RAPAPORT...  The Hong Kong Jewellery & Watch Fair opened yesterday with a record 1,290 exhibitors. The show expanded floor space to accommodate more than 2,300 booths.

"The purchasing power of Asian buyers is getting stronger in recent years owing to the economic growth in some Asian countries such as China and India," said Celine Lau, director of jewellery fairs at CMP Asia Ltd.  "This facilitates the healthy growth of the June Fair, placing it among the world's top 10 international jewellery fairs. First-time exhibitors this year include companies from France, Mexico and Sri Lanka."

For this mid-year show in Hong Kong, organizers expanded the diamond pavilion to accommodate 250 booths and more than 120 diamond firms. Other themed pavilions include: Fine jewellery; pearls; gemstones; silver jewellery; and packaging and technology.

Exhibitors from Singapore have put together a group pavilion. Other group pavilions include: Antwerp, mainland China, Italy, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and United States.

The June Hong Kong Jewellery & Watch Fair is held concurrently with Asia's Fashion Jewellery & Accessories Fair and runs through June 22. The Hong Kong show is sponsored by the Gemmological Association of Hong Kong;  Gemological Institute of America; Hong Kong Gold & Silver Ornament Workers; Merchants General Union; and the Kowloon Pearls, Precious Stones, Jade, Gold and Silver Ornament Merchants Association.
