ICA Foresees Collateral Damage from Burmese Ruby Ban

RAPAPORT... The International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA)  has asked its members to stop buying gemstones from Myanmar (Burma) directly and from third party sources. However the group also warns that the systematic ban on the trade of Burmese gemstones may have a negative impact and cause collateral damage upon independent and poor populations engaged in mining, processing, and trading activities in Myanmar and other countries.

President George W. Bush signed a bill to ban Myanmar rubies and jadeite on July 29, 2008.

“Those who will suffer are the very people that the legislation intended to protect,” Andrew Cody, president of ICA, said in a statement.

“It is a pity that the leadership in national, international and governmental agencies, people that are not really in-the-know as to what takes place on the ground, failed to consult our association on this issue, and to our knowledge, no collateral damage study was undertaken,” he concluded.

Have you ever been to Myanmar?
Country is mostly poor, but people are polite, helpful, simple for every foreigners. There are 135 different minorities races in Myanmar. Lovely country from SE asia.
US president never been to Myanmar. He know only exile's bias political reports and unfair media all over the world. Also his 1st lady only met Myanmar exile camps near Myanmar-Thailand border. It's unmeaningful and rude for Myanmar's ordinary peoples.
Now your new ban is very crazy activities and no effective for Myanmar Jewellers.
Mr.Bush if you don't like Myanmar Rubies and Jades, you can buy diamond from New York.
Please do not disturb our Myanmar Jeweller's small market.
Your activities is very shameful and crazy for our Myanmar jewellers. If you wish ,when you retire president post near future, pls visit to Myanmar. You should listen neutral ordinary people's voice.Myanmar is neither Iraq nor Afganistan for US.No one interest for sucide bombing .Because mostly neutral Myanmar people want to stay peaceful Buddhist.
