RAPAPORT... Christopher Smith, the president of American Gemological Laboratories (AGL), Suzan Flamm, the assistant general counsel for the Jewelers Vigilance Committee (JVC)  and others will participate in a hands-on workshop designed to identify composite rubies on June 4, 2010 in Las Vegas. Many retailers, bench jewelers and designers are buying these composites unknowingly and passing them on without proper disclosure.

Since a composite ruby is not just another kind of "treated ruby" or "fracture-filled" ruby, the workshop attendees will learn how composite rubies differ from traditionally heated or glass-filled rubies, as well as what the law states about disclosure.

Accredited Gemologists Association (AGA) board member Craig Lynch pointed out, “When you know what to look for, it’s not difficult to spot most of them with a simple jeweler’s loupe, even if you have little or no gemological training.”

AGA will open this workshop to nonmembers at the member's price in order to give everyone an opportunity to attend.  Space for the workshop is limited and the cost to attend is $75, which includes a cocktail reception.

Time: 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: Platinum Hotel
211 E. Flamingo Road (at Koval Ln.)
Las Vegas, Nevada
