U.S. Polished Diamond Imports +27% in April

RAPAPORT... U.S. polished diamond imports rose 27 percent year on year in April to $1.71 billion. By volume, the imports fell 2 percent to 1.025 million carats as the average price of the goods increased 29 percent from a year earlier to $1,671.31 per carat.

Polished exports grew 35 percent to $1.32 billion during the month as net polished imports, representing the excess of imports over exports and the amount of polished that stayed in the country for consumption, rose 6 percent to $397 million.

Rough imports fell 10 percent to $36 million while rough exports grew 46 percent to $38 million. Net rough imports fell to a deficit of $2 million, compared with positive $14 million a year earlier.

The U.S. April net diamond account, representing total imports of polished and rough less total exports, grew 10 percent to $399 million.

During the first four months of the year, polished imports to the U.S. increased 27 percent to $6.87 billion, while polished exports rose 39 percent to $5.64 billion. Net polished imports fell 10 percent to $1.23 billion.

Rough imports for January through April increased 30 percent to $210 million while rough exports grew 83 percent to $143 million. Net rough imports declined by 19 percent to $67 million.

The U.S. net diamond account up to the end of April fell 9 percent to $1.16 billion.
