RAPAPORT... The AnchorCert Gemstone Certification Service has launched a   Gemstone Carat Weight Estimator app for smart phones. AnchorCert stated that with just a couple of clicks, the app  can easily calculate the estimated carat weight of diamonds and gemstones from measurements.

The calculation will use the measurement of the length, width and depth of the gemstone, and the minimum and maximum diameter of round brilliant diamonds.  The carat weight estimator contains a comprehensive database of diamonds and gemstones as well as a wide selection of shapes and cuts.  The free demo version, which is currently available for Android phones, shows how to use the app  and offers all functions  for a small sample of stones and shapes.

The full version of this app will be released soon for  both Android and iPhone and can be downloaded for around $20 from the Android Market and the Apps for iPhone store.

Michael Allchin, the chief executive of AnchorCert's parent company, the Birmingham Assay Office, said, ''We are aware of the changing needs of the jewelry industry that we serve and are always trying to create innovative products and services to help them do business. By investing in the AnchorCert app, we have taken a leap into the new age of mobile information and we are confident our customers will find this app incredibly useful.

''Our own SafeGuard valuers have been [testing the app] in different formats over the past year and are very impressed. While nothing can ever be as accurate as weighing a loose stone, this is not always possible. We see the new app being of benefit to all jewelry valuers, pawnbrokers and jewelers trading in second-hand pieces. It will also be attractive to those who have a personal interest in gemstones.''
