RAPAPORT... Christie’s will auction the jewelry collection of  Lily Safra, in a sale comprised of  70 lots that is estimated to net more than  $20 million.  All proceeds from the auction, which will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel Des Bergues in Geneva on May 14, will be donated to 20 different charitable institutions.

The collection will  tour  London, New York, Paris and Hong Kong from March 29 to April 28.  Viewings will also be held before the sale from May 11 through May 14 at the Four Seasons.

Lots in the auction include diamonds, rubies, sapphires as well as antique and period jewelry.  Also included is a section of 18 jewelry pieces by French designer JAR made exclusively for Safra between the 1980s and 2000s. According to Christie’s, the section is the largest private collection of jewelery by JAR ever to be offered at an auction.

Safra is the wife of the late Edmond J. Safra who was founder of the Edmond J. Safra Philanthropic Foundation, which she has chaired since 2000.

François Curiel, the international head of jewelry for Christie's, said, ''A sublime collection of 70 rare jewels, comprising the very best in all styles, periods and makers, from the late 18th Century all the way to modern times, is enough to attract the attention of jewelry amateurs and professionals worldwide. When it includes also the largest group of creations by JAR ever to be offered at auction, it is bound to create a sensation. And when the entire proceeds of the sale are to be shared between 20 hand-picked charitable institutions in the four corners of the world, this landmark sale rises to a whole new level. Only a connoisseur with an eye as refined as that of Mrs. Lily Safra could have collected such an ensemble of jewels, and only someone with her philanthropic conviction could have expressed such powerful support to worthwhile causes in all charitable fields. We are proud to be associated with such a commendable endeavor.”
