Rio Tinto Appoints Truter to Oversee Argyle Mine

RAPAPORT... Rio Tinto appointed Kim Truter as the managing director of the company's Argyle diamond mine in Australia, effective July 1.
Truter held a number of senior roles within Rio Tinto and most recently served as president and chief operating officer of the Diavik diamond mine in Canada. He was instrumental in leading the development of underground mining at the Diavik mine, the company noted.
“I am delighted with Kim’s appointment and his extensive experience will be invaluable in leading the future development of the Argyle diamond mine," said Bruce Cox, the managing director of Rio Tinto Diamonds.
The Argyle mine is the world’s largest producer of colored diamonds and has produced almost 800 million carats of diamonds since launching production in 1985. The mine is currently transitioning into an underground operation below the existing open pit mine, which will extend production to at least 2019.
“The Argyle diamond mine is an iconic Australian operation and it plays an important role in Rio Tinto’s global diamonds business,” Truter said. “I am looking forward to working with the team at such an exciting time in Argyle’s growth and development.”
Truter’s appointment is the second high profile appointment for Rio Tinto’s diamond operations in just over a month, despite the company’s stated plans to exit the diamond business. The company appointed Tarun Malkani in May to lead its Bunder diamond project in Madhya Pradesh, India, also beginning July 1.
Rio Tinto in March said it was considering divesting from its diamond interests. The company owns the Argyle mine in Australia, along with a 60 percent stake in the Diavik mine in Canada, a 78 percent share of the Murowa mine in Zimbabwe and the advanced Bunder mining development project in India.
