Namdeb Action May Force MUN Strikes

RAPAPORT... Namdeb Diamond Corporation requested a certificate of unresolved dispute for wage negotiations with the Mineworkers’ Union of Namibia (MUN) after five months of negotiations. MUN representative Shavuka Mbidhi noted that Namdeb’s request could potentially force the workers to go on strike and face a lockout.
Mbidhi, who declared that workers would not be provoked to strike, accused the company of wanting “workers to go on strike as a cost-saving measure to cushion the slowed demand, which resulted in a drop of the diamond price. They have a lot of diamonds in stockpile because of the slowed demand.”
Labor Commissioner Bro Matthew Shingwandja added, “It is actually strange that the company has to ask for an unresolved dispute certificate. The employees are actually tired of striking.
Wage negotiations started in March after MUN asked for a 15 percent increase in salaries, while the Namdeb offered 7 percent.
