RAPAPORT... India's Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) aims to explore business opportunities and establish long-term trade relations with jewelers in Bangladesh as the council participates in the ongoing ''India Show'' in the neighboring country.

“The two countries have commonalities in tradition and culture and hence the Indian gem and jewelry industry foresees a fairly large demand for Indian products in the country,” said Vipul Shah, GJEPC’s chairman. “Participation at the India Show is one of the ways by which India will present its exquisite offering in gold jewelry, which sees the highest demand in Bangladesh as well as diamond jewelry in a bid to present the local buyers the entire spectrum of gem and jewelry products that India has to offer.”

The three-day show, which began on December 3, is being held at the Bangabandhu International Convention Centre in Dhaka. The India Show is being organized by FICCI with the support of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India as well as being promoted and supported by the Ministry of Commerce of Bangladesh. The show is focused on establishing trade ties between the two countries and aims to bring together leading business enterprises, manufacturers, as well as luminaries in art, academics as well as high level government and ministerial officials.

GJEPC is participating in the India Show with 18 prominent Indian companies that include manufacturers, diamond jewelers and gold exporters. The product offerings include affordable jewelry, medium- range as well as high-end designer products that are aimed at high-net-worth individuals.

A special fashion show, featuring exclusive range of jewelry designs by the prominent Indian manufacturers, is also is scheduled for December, 4.

GJEPC stated that India's gem and jewelry trade with Bangladesh has been on the rise in the past five years, even though the value doesn't represent a major part of the total. The council also noted that strategic location, a low-cost and industrious workforce, re-export government policies conducive to trade and continuous bilateral trade-enhancing talks between the two countries, among other factors, make Bangladesh an ideal destination for the Indian jewelry industry.
