RAPAPORT... Wallace Chan will be the first winner of the "Outstanding Contribution of the Year" award, given by Jewellery News Asia (JNA), on September 12 in Hong Kong.

Chan (pictured) is an artist, sculptor, jewelry designer and craftsman who has worked for nearly three decades on his craft. "Efficiency comes from diligence and success depends on forethought. I believe that for any industry to be efficient and successful, it is important to be devoted to one's craft and, at the same time, be brave enough to innovate," he said in a statement. "This prestigious recognition serves as a great encouragement for me to further push my creative boundaries."

Chan invented the "Wallace Cut," a crystal-carving technique, in the mid-1980s. His work has been showcased in exhibitions in China, the U.S., Germany, Italy and many other countries. To date, he is the only Asian artist invited to the Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris, which he attended in 2012.

"Wallace has made his mark in the global jewelry industry with his unique insight and creativity, which translate into a collection of amazing masterpieces," said Letitia Chow, the chair of the JNA Awards judging panel, in a press release. "His accomplishments have not only put his name on the world map, but have brought Asian designs in the forefront of the artistry world.

The JNA Awards recognize achievement in the global jewelry trade with an Asian focus, and will be held during the September Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair, held from September 11 to 17.
