Press Release: PhotoScribe Technologies Inc. is delighted to announce that it was granted a patent for its light performance system, (United States Patent No. US 8,705,018 B2). The system was developed as a request from the industry to fulfill the need for a true, high-quality scientific device to capture the characteristics of light behavior in diamonds, determining the efficiency of diamond performance. The six attributes being measured in the light performance system are brilliance, fire, scintillation, contrast, optical symmetry and coverage. Definitions for each attribute are:

Brilliance: The total amount and intensity of light returned from the gemstone (i.e. efficiency).

Fire: The total amount and intensity of colored light returned from the gemstone.

Scintillation: The sparkle of a diamond. Scintillation is the rapid change of reflected light seen when the diamond is viewed in motion.

Contrast: The intensity of the bright light returned when compared to the intensity of the non-returned or black area. The higher the contrast, the more lively a diamond's appearance.

Optical Symmetry: The measurement of the balance of the pattern light returns from facets facing each other around an axis. Good optical symmetry is an indication of diamond polishing accuracy and quality. Optical symmetry could also be affected by internal inclusions.

Coverage: The percentage of a diamond that will return light to the viewer from any angle of illumination (i.e. the opposite of leakage)

While the 4Cs of a diamond try to grade the characteristics of diamond relating to rarity, the light performance system quantifies the efficiency of a diamond’s interaction with light, which translates to measurable diamond beauty. David Benderly, the CEO of PhotoScribe Technologies, said, "PhotoScribe is a company dedicated to innovations. We are focused on adding value to our customers by solving real industry challenges. The current patent is a nice validation of this effort."

PhotoScribe’s patented system quantifies light behavior characteristics and those numbers are translated into grades that describe desirable diamond attributes; in other words it measures the beauty of a diamond. This is another step in PhotoScribe’s continuous investment in technology and dedication to research and development of innovative solutions for the industry.

About PhotoScribe Technologies:
Founded in 1998, PhotoScribe Technologies is headquartered in New York with offices in Minnesota and manufacturing in Germany. PhotoScribe Technologies designs, builds, installs and services turn-key laser systems primarily for direct part micro-marking and micro-machining applications in a variety of industries.

The company focuses on manufacturing lasers for extreme conditions such as micro-scale marking, hard, transparent and brittle material processing and extreme speed mark-on-the-fly applications. PhotoScribe has set the industry standard for high contrast and transparent inscriptions on diamond for over 10 years with their “cold” Excimer laser technology,\ and is considered the world leader in marking materials that are challenging to mark (for example, due to transparency, brittleness or sensitivity to temperature).
