RAPAPORT... De Beers spending on skills training for its workforce and social projects jumped last year, according to the miner’s Report to Society published this week.

The company pumped $52.5 million into the cause in 2015, a 13 percent rise compared with a year ago. Investment in workforce training surged 30 percent to $24.3 million, while spending on social projects added 2.2 percent to $28.2 million.

De Beers said its safety performance improved and the company saved $6.8 million by reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions over the last two years.

“Positive performance must not be seen as grounds for complacency,” Philippe Mellier, the chief executive officer of De Beers, said. “We will redouble our efforts in 2016 so that diamonds continue to have a positive and lasting impact for our partners, our employees and the communities in which we operate.”

Separately, the company recorded 173 “infringements” of De Beers best-practice principles by sightholders and accredited buyers, an increase from 111 in 2014. Of these, the largest increase was “social infringements,” which jumped from 83 to 143. This category covers areas such as compliance with labor laws, health and safety standards and human rights frameworks.
