RAPAPORT... Rio Tinto reached a milestone of producing 100 million carats from its Diavik diamond mine in Canada since operations began in 2003.

The Diavik pit is located on an island in a remote sub-arctic lake in Northwest Territories and produces gem-quality diamonds that are used in making high-end jewelry around the globe, Rio Tinto said. Diamonds are extracted from it in “some of the harshest operating conditions in the world,” according to Simon Trott, Rio Tinto’s managing director for diamonds, salt and uranium.

Development of the A21 kimberlite pipe, the mine’s fourth pipe, was approved in 2014, with production expected to start in 2018.
