RAPAPORT... Sotheby’s launched a luxury and lifestyle division tapping seasoned auctioneer Marteen ten Holder as managing director of the business.
The restructuring unites jewelry, watches, wine, cars
and ‘experiences’ under one senior executive with ten Holder (pictured) bringing experience in each of the categories to the role.
He began his career at Sotheby’s in Amsterdam, playing a role in large country-house sales across Europe, eventually overseeing the sales of Edvard Munch’s The Scream and the personal collection
of David Bowie. Ten Holder was involved in jewelry sales including a record-breaking
auction in Geneva in May 2016 that fetched $175 million.
He has also been involved with car auctions since 2005. In
November, he was an auctioneer for the RM Sotheby’s Duemila Ruote car sale in
Milan, Europe’s “largest” automobile-collection sale, Sotheby’s said. The auction
attracted more than 3,000 bidders and doubled pre-sale expectations with
combined sales of $54.9 million.
To fill the position, ten Holder will move to New York from London, where he was most recently managing director of Sotheby’s operations in Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa.
