Gübelin Gem Lab has launched a permanent location in New York as part of a global expansion program that has seen the Swiss laboratory build a presence in three continents.

Gübelin opened the lab at the start of this year in response to an increase in demand from gem traders, it said. It initially set up the base in 2015 to build up its infrastructure ahead of launching permanent services.

The new lab will facilitate the firm’s participation in U.S. trade fairs. The group has also become a member of the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) and will test gemstones on-site for the first time at the AGTA GemFair in Tucson, which runs from January 31 to February 5.

The Lucerne-based group, known for its expertise in colored gemstones, opened its first overseas lab in Hong Kong in 2010.
