The Jewelry Industry Summit (JIS) is turning its attention to environmental issues in its next webinar taking place on May 5.

“This webinar seeks to clarify for our community the often-complicated statements made by sellers about the environmental impact of the production of jewelry products,” explained Cecilia Gardner, chair of the summit.

The event, titled “Jewelry and the Environment,” will feature four panelists, including Avi Krawitz, senior analyst at Rapaport; Sara Yood, deputy general counsel at the Jewelers Vigilance Committee (JVC); Tobias Schultz, director of research and development at SCS Global Services; and Kesha Frank, head of production at Fair Trade Jewellery Co. Jared Holstein, owner of jewelry brand D’Amadeo, will moderate the panel.

JIS was set up as a forum to develop collaborative approaches to solving sustainability issues and to empower businesses in the community to become more sustainable and to source more responsibly, according to its website.

“The summit provides practical steps for participants to take action now to support responsible sourcing,” Gardner added. “In highlighting the nature of the ‘green’ claims sellers make, buyers can better assess the true environmental impact of the jewelry they consider for their inventory.”
