RAPAPORT...
Lucara Diamond Corp. cofounder Lukas Lundin died last week at the age of 64 following a two-year battle with brain cancer.

Lundin started his career in the early 1980s in the international energy and mining sectors, working with his father at the Lundin Group of Companies. The business, which comprises 11 firms internationally, employs more than 15,000 people and has a combined market capitalization of more than $11 billion.

In 2007, Lundin founded Lucara with Catherine McLeod-Seltzer and Eira Thomas, with the moniker for the company coming from an amalgamation of their first names. Lundin served as a director and chairman of the board of Lucara until May 2022. The company acquired the AK06 kimberlite in Botswana in 2010 and began production from the site, which they named Karowe, in 2012. The deposit, known for its production of large, high-quality, type IIa diamonds, is the only mine in recorded history to have recovered three diamonds weighing more than 1,000 carats each.

“Lukas will be remembered as a visionary, a man of true conviction who was never afraid to swim against the tide once the value of an opportunity became apparent,” said Lucara CEO Thomas and director McLeod-Seltzer. “Africa was…one of Lukas’s favorite places, and through his work with Lucara and the Lundin Foundation, he leaves a lasting legacy of positive economic development that will benefit generations to come. We will deeply miss our intrepid and legendary leader, who will forever inspire us to be bold and think big.”

Lundin is survived by his brother Ian and sons, Harry, Adam, Jack and William.
