RAPAPORT...
Sotheby’s Geneva will hold a landmark single-owner
sale of important jewels from the collection of Dimitri Mavrommatis on November 12. The
collection includes rare precious stones and avant-garde jewelry designs that are estimated to bring more than $20 million.
Leading the sale is the exceptionally
important 8.62-carat, cushion-shaped “Graff Ruby” ring (pictured), which possesses the rare vivid red
hue known as pigeon’s blood, according to the
Swiss Gemmological Institute (SSEF), and is also of outstanding
purity and superb brilliance. The ring carries a presale estimate of $6.8 million to $9 million.
A second exceptional piece is a 27.54-carat, velvety-blue Kashmir sapphire ring with a presale estimate of $3 million to $6 million.
Spectacular jewels by JAR include
a pair of
superb sapphire, ruby and diamond earrings (pictured below), each of
circular form, pavé-set with sapphires and featuring a
stylized cage -– one set with a ruby, the other
with a diamond. The earrings are estimated to sell in the range of $400,000 to $700,000.
A fine diamond brooch of floral design by Graff that depicts a flower head set en
tremblant, features a 3.31-carat, brilliant-cut diamond and is expected to achieve a
price of between $100,000 and $150,000.
David Bennett, the chairman of Sotheby’s jewelry division for Europe and the
Middle East, said, “This outstanding collection presents exquisite gemstones, such as the sensational
Graff Ruby, alongside stunning jewelry creations by JAR. It is a testament to Dimitri Mavrommatis’
discerning eye and impeccable taste and presents a rare opportunity to acquire gems
and jewels of
exceptional quality.’’
