RAPAPORT... The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) has granted Alrosa certified-member
status following an extensive review of the Russian miner’s operations by an
external assessor.
Certified members are companies that have undergone
independent auditing to confirm that they comply with the global standards
group’s “Code of Practices.” The decision constitutes an upgrade for Alrosa, which has been a basic RJC member since September 2016.
A “large, independent” audit company spent several months
looking into Alrosa’s sustainability performance, the rough producer said
Tuesday. That included appraising its social-responsibility, environmental-protection
and anti-corruption practices, as well as working conditions and respect for
human rights. Representatives of the auditor visited several Alrosa facilities,
including major production sites, sorting centers and subsidiaries.
Following that process, the RJC admitted Alrosa for three years,
the longest period possible, the miner explained.
Getting RJC certification “proves to consumers that modern
diamond mining is a transparent and responsible business,” according to Alrosa president Sergey
Ivanov.
Other diamond miners with RJC certification include De
Beers, Dominion Diamond Mines, Lucara Diamond Corp. and Rio Tinto. |
