Colored Gemstone

Making The Cut

By Amber Michelle
Mother Earth gives us the gift of a gemstone, but it is the skill of the lapidary artist that makes that gem truly spectacular. A lapidary artist coaxes the best color from the stone and finds ways to bring out the inner radiance of the gem. The lapidary arts date back to the Stone Age, but techniques have come a long way since then and today’s artists are able to create sophisticated designs in gemstones that are benchmarks of innovation. The American Gem Trade Association’s (AGTA) Spectrum Awards honor excellence and creativity in lapidary arts in the Cutting Edge division of the competition. On these pages you will find the winning entries from The Cutting Edge division of the AGTA 2016 Spectrum Awards, which will be on display at the 2017 AGTA GemFair in Tucson, Arizona, from January 31 through February 5.
