Japan 2006 Polished Diamond Imports -4.2% to $1B

RAPAPORT... Japan’s polished diamond imports dropped 22.9 percent to $61.7 million in December, according to figures released by the JClub Inc. This marks the fifth consecutive month of decline in Japan’s polished diamond imports in value terms.
 
India, Belgium, and Israel contributed a combined 78 percent of Japan’s total polished diamonds by value.
 
Polished diamond imports from India fell 5.8 percent to $24.4 million. Imports from Belgium dropped 22.3 percent to $17.7 million in value, while imports from Israel plunged 43.5 percent to $6 million. Notably, polished imports from China surged 66.4 percent to $1.4 million.
 
In carat terms, Japan’s polished diamond imports rose 20.4 percent to 191,191 carats in December. India contributed 76.7 percent of Japan’s polished diamonds by volume. Compared with December 2005, imports from India increased 43 percent to 146,701 carats. Imports from Belgium fell 14.8 percent to 16,591 carats while imports from Israel fell 44.9 percent to 4,831 carats.
 
For the full year 2006, Japan’s total polished imports declined 4.2 percent to $1 billion in value, but climbed 10.4 percent in volume to 2.7 million carats. This translates into a 13.3 percent drop in price per carat of Japan’s polished imports during 2006 to $372 per-carat.
